The CMSC conference series was started in 2013 at Charles Darwin University in Darwin, Australia. It was funded with considerable support by Google Australia, the University, and the Australian Mathematics Society. The aim is to develop computational thinking materials and activities that are hands-on and do not require a computer and that help in understanding both the foundamentals of the science as well as the open, unsolved problems that are being worked on currently by scientists.
Every CMSC includes a school visit or interaction with teachers and students. In 2013, we went into the bush and to an Aboriginal school. In Chennai, we went to a large gathering of rural schools. We believe outreach is a two-way street and that science thinking is broadened by listening to the students. In 2022, CMSC will be part of the All-Bergen Science Festival.
