Reaching Bergen

Bergen is located almost directly west of Oslo. The “Norway in a Nutshell” tourist train trip from Oslo to Bergen or from Bergen to Oslo is highly recommended. It can be completed in one day, or alternatively, spend the night enroute. From either direction, the trip begins on the main Oslo-Bergen rail line (with majestic mountain views). After some distance, the Nutshell departs from the main line to take you on a fjord excursion and to view a glacier. You then rejoin the main line.

Bergen Airport Flesland is located 18 kilometers south of Bergen. There are bus, light rail and taxi to go from the airport to Bergen city center.

There are flights from many destinations in Europe operated by regular as well as low-cost airlines. See the websites above.

Around-the-World tickets may be cheaper if you are coming from Australia or afar, especially if you also attend related events.

For information about traveling to Bergen as well as its history and tourism, see Visit Bergen and the Bergen wikitravel page.

Accommodation

The location of the conference is:

  • Wednesday, Wednesday night, Thursday at the Hotel Solstrand.
  • Friday, Friday evening, Saturday at the Department of Informatics, University of Bergen, Bergen.

You will likely arrive on Tuesday and need accommodation on Tuesday night in Bergen. The bus departs from the Department of Informatics to travel to the Solstrand Hotel (about one hour) on Wednesday morning at 8AM.

Presenters and attendees will need accommodation in Bergen for Thursday, Friday and perhaps Saturday nights. It is only Wednesday night that we will be at the Solstrand Hotel. The Solstrand Hotel is over an hour away from Bergen, so it is recommended to stay in Bergen for Thursday, Friday of the conference.

Marta Lopez can help you make hotel accommodations in Bergen. Please use the Contact form on the Committees page to send her a request or write to her directly at Marta.Lopez@uib.no.

The following hotels may be of interest:

  • Hotel Park is a beautiful small hotel close to the University, railway station and walking distance to city center. Highly recommend.
  • Grand Terminus is centrally located in the city center opposite the railway station and bus station.
  • Hotel Oleana is next to the theatre in Bergen city center.
  • Radisson Blu Royal is on the western side of old Bryggen, on the harbour, with lovely views across the water.

Getting Around Bergen

You can travel around Bergen by bike with Bergen city bikes.  There is a map of stations at this website. There are stations at the university as well as many throughout town. These bikes are handy.

The Department is located in the building called Høyteknologisenteret  (High Technology Center. See, you already can speak Norwegian.) It is next to VilVita, the Science Museum. The Bergen Light Trail  stop is called:  “Florida”,  the stop is right next to our building.

A formal letter of invitation to attend the conference can be forwarded to any participant upon sending an email to Frances Rosamond using the Contact form at the bottom of the Committees page. Such an invitation implies no obligation on the part of the Organizers to cover registration fee, accommodation, travel expenses, or any other costs relative to the participation in the meeting.
